About the Author

Martha Berry was an American educator and founder of the Berry Schools, a network of private schools in Georgia. She is also notable for her work in promoting education for African Americans and girls. Berry was born in Eatonton, Georgia, in 1866. She attended college at the University of Georgia and began her teaching career there. After marrying E.D. Berry in 1892, she moved to Rome, Georgia, and founded the Berry School for girls. The school soon grew into a network of schools, serving both white and African American students. Berry was a vocal advocate for education and worked to improve the quality of education for rural students. She also promoted the use of new technologies in education, such as the use of the nail file as a teaching tool. Berry Schools continue to operate today and are among the most prestigious private schools in the United States.
